I’ll never forget receiving that dreaded call from my mom. You know the one I’m talking about, that call you hope you never receive. But I did. I was about to head home for Spring Break my junior year of college at Duke University. She was down in Florida with my dad, who was being inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers, one of the most prestigious awards you can receive in that profession. It should have been a joyous occasion. But instead, she called me and said: “Your dad has had a heart incident. He survived, but he’s lucky. He’s going to be having open heart surgery tomorrow. Instead of going home, we’d like you to come down to Florida to be with him.” And so I went. And in many ways, that phone call changed my life forever.

Hi, my name is Brett Ethridge, co-founder of Thrive Team International, and I’m happy to report that my dad survived that scare and is doing well. But if you’re anything like me, when something like that happens, you start asking a lot of questions. How does a 51-year-old father of three end up on an operating table like that? How does a former college football star, otherwise healthy looking on the outside, end up with clogged arteries needing 7 bypasses? Could it have been prevented? And how do I make sure the same thing doesn’t happen to me when I’m 51?

For me, it led to a course correction in terms of what I wanted to do with my life. See, at the time, I was pre-law and very much on the path to following in my dad’s footsteps. But that experience made me question what was really important in my life, and what I realized was, what good is all the success and money in the world if you don’t have the health to enjoy it with the ones you love? So I committed myself to answering those questions and learning everything I could about what true health really means, and that’s why we’re so passionate about our Thrive for Life Program and empowering others with that knowledge to live healthier, more vibrant lives themselves. And I’m excited to share some of what I’ve learned with you in the rest of this video.

Now in this video, as the title suggests, we’re going to talk about supplements and weight loss — and specifically, I’m going to tell you the three most crucial supplements you should be taking for weight loss, plus a bonus supplement that you’ve probably never considered before. But first we have to set the stage. Because carrying extra weight is usually a reflection of something else going on, so we have to understand the big picture of health and disease.

If you’ve been paying attention at all, I’m sure you’ve seen the statistics. The #1 cause of death in the world, the #1 cause of death in America, the #1 cause of death among men, and the #1 cause of death among women, is all the same thing: Heart disease. When you throw in cancer, stroke, diabetes, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer’s, 7 out of 8 Americans can expect to develop one or more of them at some point in their lifetime. And of course underlying all of it is the ever-expanding waist-line of people, where overweight and obesity is so closely linked to all of those chronic diseases.

So again the question, Why? Why are we seeing so much obesity and chronic disease in our world today? Let me draw out a quick analogy for you that I think will make sense to you. I like to think about our health as a table, and the question is, what’s holding it up? Well if you remember back to Video #1 in this series — and thanks for all the great feedback and comments and questions on that video, by the way, the response we’ve gotten has been incredible! — we talked about the Thrive for Life Triad and talked about food, and a good diet, really being the cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle program. And so when we think about what’s supporting the table, your health, it’s good food — vitamins and minerals and nutrients. But there’s also opposing forces pushing down on the table from up top. Things that are putting pressure on our health, things like stress and poor diet and toxins and chemicals.

Now you might be thinking to yourself, well this is great, I buy organic so I’m not getting any toxins or chemicals in my food! But let me ask you this: Do you brush your teeth? Have you ever noticed the warning label on the side of toothpaste? It says that if you swallow it, to contact a Poison Control Center immediately! Are you serious? Why would they say that? Because there’s stuff in there you shouldn’t be putting in your mouth. Okay, maybe you use a natural toothpaste. That’s great, but do you breathe? I’m sure you do and the truth is most of us are breathing in and taking in an untold number of toxins and chemicals even from the air we are breathing today.

Now, I’m not trying to scare you, but the point is that there’s a lot of potentially harmful things we’re exposed to on a daily basis without even realizing it. And are you really telling me that you have no stress in your life? When I think back to my dad’s situation, he wasn’t overweight, but I truly believe it was the stress of 25+ years as a trial attorney that had taken a toll on his body. The truth is that we have more things “pushing down on our table of health” than ever before in the history of man. Now the result of all of this stuff pushing down on your table is called oxidative stress, or free radical damage. I’m not going to go into a science lecture here, but I’m sure you’ve heard of oxidation before. Basically it’s when your cells become damaged from all of this unnecessary damage. Have you ever seen an apple turn brown when you leave it out on your counter? That’s a visual representation of oxidative stress happening in real life, and it’s happening inside our bodies every time we eat a fast food meal, take a puff of a cigarette, or carry extra stress from work. And over time, it really wreaks havoc.

But now what about food? What about what’s supporting the table? Food is what provides us with the antioxidants and healthy nutrients that can help fight this oxidative damage pressing down on our table of health! Well let me ask you this: How many of you are eating 9-13 servings of fruits and vegetables every single day? Statistically, no more than 5 in 100 of you are. But even if you’re one of those 5, how confident are you that you’re actually getting the nutrients you need from that food? Unfortunately, what we know is that our soils are over-farmed, and the nutrients simply aren’t in our soils any more so they’re not getting in to the food. And foods are over-processed or picked before they are ripe and can take days or even weeks to get from the fields to your dinner plate, during which time precious vitamins have been lost. And so you see here how much of the different foods you’d have to be eating on a daily basis just to get your basic Vitamin E needs for the day, let alone all of the different vitamins and minerals you need every day for a balanced diet. I don’t know about you, but 74 cups of spinach a day is a LOT. And so if you you’re thinking your table is being supported by a bunch of strong legs, it’s likely not as much as you think it is.

And what about the downward pressure of oxidative stress and free radical damage caused by stress, poor diet, and other harmful things? The truth is that it’s probably even more than we think it is, so for many of us, it’s actually like having a sumo wrestler sitting on top of our table of health that’s really more like a tripod stool only being held up by a couple of spindly legs. So what do you think is going to happen? Of course. At some point, it’s going to collapse. And that’s why we’re seeing the high incidence of obesity and chronic disease that we talked about earlier.

But there’s good news. I was attending a lecture a while back given by a heart surgeon from Chicago named Dr. Tom Carter. He was talking about complications he sees with his heart patients post-surgery, and how one day it dawned on him: What’s the best way to deal with complications post-surgery? Not to have the heart surgery in the first place! So a lot of his talk was about what I’m going to share with you in this video about the preventive benefits of certain vitamins and minerals for health and weight loss, but he had really good news about chronic disease in general. Take a look at this short clip from his talk. Now pay close attention because the sound quality isn’t great, but I think you’ll get the idea.

That’s great news, isn’t it! That should be empowering to you! As Dr. Carter said, simple lifestyle changes can make a huge difference. But how? What changes should you be making? Well we already talked about it in Video #1 in this series and alluded to it here, but let’s go back to the Thrive for Life triad: We need a healthy diet, exercise, and supplementation in balance. See, nutritional supplementation is so crucial because it fills that gap between what we need in terms of antioxidant protection in the body and what we’re not getting from our food. What’s more, when we’re trying to fight chronic disease, we need even more vitamins and minerals than we ever have before, and so high doses are required. In fact, that’s what Dr. Carter spent a lot of the rest of his talk addressing — all of the studies showing how high levels of things like vitamin C or omega-3 fatty acids can help prevent things like cancer and heart disease.

So let’s dive in to it.

The first thing absolutely everyone should be taking not only for optimum health, but for weight loss as well is actually two things: a potent vitamin antioxidant supplement and a multi-mineral supplement. Why? Well because of everything we talked about earlier, we need to constantly be fighting the free radical damage we’re exposed to on a daily basis. But more than that, we need to put our bodies back into a position where they can begin to release fat again.

Let me give you another analogy. In a lot of ways, your cell membranes are like an air filter for your air conditioner. At first, air passes back and forth easily. With your cells, nutrients get in and toxins get out. Everything is working great. But then what happens? Slowly, over time, the air filter starts to get dirty, right? It just happens. With our cells, it’s the same thing. Every time you eat McDonald’s or are exposed to pollutants or do something to create excess oxidative stress in your body, your cells get a little “dirtier.” Now with your air filter, if it gets too dirty, it becomes a lot less efficient. It causes your energy bills to go up and in fact, one time I even had it completely “blow out” of its holder because there was simply too much air pressure and nowhere for it to go. Unfortunately, the same thing can happen to your cells. As they become “too dirty,” your body can experience a “blow out.” It starts with weight gain and your body holding on to fat, and eventually it can manifest itself as metabolic syndrome or even full-blown Type-2 diabetes. And so you want to prevent that from happening, or start to reverse it if it already is. And antioxidants and minerals help that process.

Now, of course, not all supplement products are created equal. Some aren’t scientifically sound, some aren’t bioavailable to the cells, some aren’t complete, some aren’t pure, and so on. We personally use and recommend a product called The Essentials in our Thrive for Life Program. In addition to being essential for nearly every function in the body from heart health to brain health, omega-3 fats are also a key ingredient in the make-up of your cell membranes — the things that let nutrients in and toxins out. And so it’s so crucial that we keep them pliable so we don’t experience a “blow out” like with your furnace, and omega-3’s do exactly that.

There are a lot of omega-3 fatty acid products out on the market, but it’s really important that you find one that not only has the correct ratios of EPA to DHA, in the right amounts, but also that it’s pharmaceutical-grade so that it doesn’t contain any mercury, pesticides or other contaminants. Now be careful when reading the label — some products will say things like “no mercury added.” What is that about? Of course we hope you haven’t added any mercury! But that doesn’t mean there’s not already some in there. So be careful. And, it’s a good idea to get an ecologically sound product, too. Many omega fatty acid products that are available come from fishing practices that are harmful to our environment and of course that’s not good. The product we use is called Biomega, also from USANA Health Sciences, because we can trust the in-house pharmaceutical manufacturing process, the same standards that govern their multi vitamin and mineral products which we already talked about being #1 in the industry.

Let’s finish drawing out the cycle of what happens as you start to lose weight. Antioxidants help you to start to release fat and shed weight. But as you do, as we mentioned, toxins are also released from your cells, which should be a good thing. But think about that for a second. What happens when you now have a bunch of additional toxins floating around in your system? More oxidative and free radical damage!
